I saw the eclipse last Monday while planted on the side of a hill with a friend in Greenwood Cemetery. We shared a joint just as the sun started being devoured. Just before that we had been in a chapel where the organizers had arranged for a gong jamboree. A hootenanny of gonging, minus the Woody Guthrie. I should have tried the pot before that. It was really relaxing as this one guy with a bunch of mallets just casually walked around tapping different gongs. That was the “opener” for the main event. We observed the eclipse through our 3-d glasses somebody had given us as we entered the grounds.
Once the eclipse began you could see how this was going to go. My first thought was “why is this such a big deal for us common folk?” Jenna Levin, the head of the Columbia physics department, had written a nice little story about how scientists many years ago proved a theory about light bending around the sun because they were able to see a galaxy that was hidden behind it as they observed the eclipse. I, on the other hand, was looking at the round sun being obscured by another round shape that made it in to the cartoon version of the moon. The moon ate the sun until it looked like itself. I think there’s something there to think about. There have been so many stories that have been generated from events like this.
Molly’s friend came to visit from Greece this last week. She got the full NYC experience and it didn’t involve the Statue of Liberty. Her first day in we had our little earthquake. A little shakey shake. It was barely discernible, to Molly and I, from the pounding on our walls of renovations our neighbor is doing. She also had her luggage stolen, her phone died, and lost her credit card. To finish her week, she got to experience the eclipse. That’s some good timing, aside from the credit card and luggage problems. They worked themselves out and she was totally fine. I hadn’t really taken the past week’s high points all in, but I’m just going to call all these events that I experienced “an average week”. I didn’t travel anywhere, I just had a typical work week and a little social life, but cool stuff happened!
Looking forward to a few things coming up. Details:
