This is a shit picture of one of my better oil paintings. I rarely get good pictures of my larger work. I painted it probably between ‘07 and ‘09. I don’t think I ever put it in a show. But its in the one that just happened at Landmark Spaces in Chelsea this past Thursday.
I think this will be a photo dump week. I always had (and still do) the idea to knock out little illustrations for my little tales and observations but that takes time I can’t seem to make. I almost always forget to pull my camera out to snap pictures because when I’m having an experience I’m in it. I’m not thinking about my camera or whatever. I do take pictures here and there so I can remember a moment.
I’m enjoying the evidence of spring even in the city. This is the tree and sidewalk across from my gym. The trees already bloomed and dropped their peddles. I took these pics just after the peak so I don’t have a shot from when the whole area glowed from the pedals carpeting everything.
Kent Avenue. I mainly took this picture because I liked the negative shape between the big buildings and the tower in the distance. And then it all was framed by the bridge.
And now there is this little guy. He is one of four kitties that rule this weed bodega not far from my gym. Two kittens and two adults. This one likes to sunbake himself between the window and the couch but he’s almost too big now to wedge himself in there.
Finally there is something about this broken trophy I found displayed on a shelf in the bathroom of a coffee shop. I was only in there long enough to pee, but the idea that came to me was how this broken trophy proudly displayed in a bathroom represented something about today. Like, here is a trophy for your efforts. It’s a shit trophy of recognition for a job not well done… but it still needed acknowledged.
Have a great weekend and I hope you get the opportunity to make someone happy. Probably, that is the most satisfying thing.
I was on my color game when I was painting these fairies. They were me blowing off some steam because jobs that people want don’t always challenge me. I enjoy what I do in general, so I enjoy commissions and illustration assignments but they usually don’t allow me to make choices that are purely my own. I really explored some colors in this series and it was immensely satisfying.
I’m at Substacks length limit so see you next time!
