Hello you person with the eyeballs soakinging up this drenched information. I’m writing from my chair tonight. I had the fortune to be able to go to Bushwig 2023. My friend Lisa, Syd and I had a blast looking at all the costumes and performances over the next eight hours. It’s a drag show with some of the most creative performances that you will see in NYC. Two standouts were the performer who came out dressed kind of like a lantern fly and danced while a “Help the lantern fly” message appeared on the screen behind her. It was pretty funny and had a lot of nice touches in the song.
The other performance was pretty awesome. A drag performer brought a stool and a book on the stage. More folks dressed as children sat down in front and they all danced to another show tune or something that drove the point home. They embraced the stupid controversy over drag queens reading to kids and showed it for the absurdity that it is.

I also got a free ticket to see a taping of Ron Bennington interview Murray Hill. He’s a drag king and he used to host a lot of burlesque shows. Some of which my girlfriend was in! I was there to see my girl do her routine but met many cool people when I went. Murray Hill was one of them. I remember thinking that guy was amazing! You know how a host of a live show will have a presence and you get the impression that they could be the show if anyone (or maybe all of them?) called out sick No, you usually don’t because most couldn’t. Murray would give the impression that he could. The only other person on Murray’s level I’ve seen is Raven O when I saw him host the shows at The Box. Two very different styles but fantastic in their own right.
I wanted to lead with this but I’m always trying to balance bragging about my GF constantly and not mentioning her at all. But today/tonight I want to acknowledge that we’ve been together around 20 years. I met her initially when she was 19 and we were dating soon after she turned 20. This week is her birthday and I’m just as head over heels for her as when we met. I’ve had such fantastic experiences with her and because of her and I can’t imagine life without her. With much love and respect, Happy birthday Molly Crabapple!

OH! I should also mention I am teaching a workshop at Art Students League in NYC on the art of caricature November 1-3. Sign up if you want to see if I can teach, if I know anything about caricatures, if I can speak and hold a cup of coffee at the same time,…

Happy Birthday to Molly!!!
Looking svelte Fred! Happy birthday Molly!
