Molly was invited to an off beat party last weekend. The theme was “bodega”. It was a cross between theater, improv, and regular party. They built a mini bodega inside a large room that would have been a nice space for a gallery show… or whatever this experience was. The directions were to look for a green tarp at about such and such address. The giveaway was there was a woman with a clipboard in front of a tarp checking people in. She whispered a numeric code to Molly as we walked in.
As we walked in to the room, on the left was a bar tended by a friend who is one of my favorite dressers. The right side of the door had a piano player playing some sort of jazz. There were some sort of tuba or tuba-like brass instruments mounted to the walls. On closer look, there were old shoes possibly from the 30’s that had been stuffed in to gaps in the tubing. They weren’t obvious at first, the instruments were dark and old looking so the shoe’s leather and black soles blended in well.
The middle of the room and almost to the back wall, there was a free standing shack that was made to look like an old bodega you might see in a more residential neighborhood in Brooklyn or Queens. But! This bodega was selling lock picks, Shasta cola, and fireworks, to name a few. The code that the clipboard person gave Molly opened up the side door to the bodega. There was a small lounge area with couches and a table that was already packed. Apparently the clipboard lady just couldn’t keep a secret.
The piano player’s friends showed up with their instruments and they played a creepy old-timey jazz version of Ironman by Black Sabbath. It was amazing! We stayed for a few more songs as we finished up our drinks and left.
Whoa, cool you got see a Toxie screening with Lloyd Kaufman!
